Niamh O'Flaherty
Senior Cycling & Accessibility Correspondent
Nylagrady Ltd
Core Expertise
Specialising in accessible cycling infrastructure and recreational routes for older adults across Ireland
Professional Journey
Early Career & Foundation
Niamh grew up in Drogheda and developed her passion for cycling and rural infrastructure after completing her Sports Science degree at University College Dublin in 2009. She's always believed that the best research happens on two wheels—getting out there, feeling the roads, and understanding what actually works for real people.
Age Action Ireland & Community Work
Early in her career, she worked as a community health coordinator for Age Action Ireland, where she organised cycling groups for older adults and recognised the critical gap in accessible route information. That's when it clicked—seniors weren't avoiding cycling because they couldn't do it. They were avoiding it because nobody had bothered to tell them which routes were actually safe and comfortable. That realisation changed everything.
Full-Time Journalism & Route Documentation
This experience led her to pursue journalism full-time, and she's spent the last 12 years meticulously researching and documenting cycling routes across Ireland. Her work has informed local council cycling initiatives across the east coast, and she's become an influential voice in promoting accessible outdoor recreation. What drives Niamh is straightforward: older adults deserve detailed, honest information about route difficulty, surface quality, amenities, and real rest spots. Not marketing fluff—actual facts you can rely on.
The Táin Trail Specialisation
Her particular expertise in the Carlingford to Omeath corridor comes from having tested the Táin Trail hundreds of times—from different fitness levels, different seasons, and different weather conditions. She's cycled it with seniors in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. She's documented every surface change, every hill gradient, every café and rest facility. This isn't theoretical knowledge. It's earned through real experience.
Current Role & Mission
Today, as Senior Cycling & Accessibility Correspondent at Nylagrady Ltd, Niamh combines scientific rigour with practical insight. Every route she writes about, she's cycled multiple times. Every recommendation comes with tested evidence. She advocates for inclusive cycling infrastructure because she's seen firsthand how the right route can change someone's life—giving them independence, community, and the joy of being outdoors again.
